  12. Professor of Computer and Information Science and of Electrical
  13. Engineering, Moore School, University of Pennsylvania (1988 -
  14. present). Research work has concentrated in ultra high speed
  15. networking and the implications of that on processor interconnect,
  16. protocols and software. This has created several joint study
  17. agreements with industrial research laboratories such as Bellcore
  18. and the RBOCS (Project Dawn - with MIT), IBM and Bellcore (Project
  19. Aurora - with MIT), and to becoming one of the principals of the
  20. NSF/Darpa research project in Gigabit Networking and Chairman of
  21. the Coordination Committee.

  23. Director of the Distributed Systems Laboratory, University of
  24. Pennsylvania (1988 - present).
  25. The DSL is the focus of the research activities in the general
  26. systems area of both the Computer Sciences and the Electrical
  27. Engineering Departments. The past year has seen extensive physical
  28. plant improvements as well as a major revamping of the educational
  29. and research programs.

  32. University of Delaware (1987 - 1988). Professor of Electrical
  33. Engineering and Professor of Computer Science, University of
  34. Delaware (1977 - 1988). Research work concentrated in distributed
  35. systems with particular emphasis on the integration of software and
  36. hardware leading to efficient implementations of such systems. Had
  37. been the leader in the creation of a campus network and had
  38. spearheaded the formation of and was the Director of the Center for
  39. Networking and Distributed Systems Applications devoted to research
  40. in such systems. It was at Delaware that the creation of SODS was
  41. undertaken and where the CSNET mail system -- MMDF was
  42. conceptualized and implemented.

  44. Associate Professor of Information and Computer Sciences and of
  45. Electrical Engineering (with Tenure), University of California at
  46. Irvine (1970 - 1977)
  47.  
  48. Created and lead the Distributed Computer System Research Project
  49. ( 1971). At the time the largest computer research activity funded
  50. by the National Science Foundation. It created the software
  51. architecture that has formed the basis for much of the Distributed
  52. Systems activities that followed. It had a number of ideas such as
  53. Client/Servers, micro-kernal, process
  54. migration, message based IPC, contract resource allocation etc.
  55. Also conceived and directed the implementation of the first
  56. distributed token ring -- a forerunner of the IBM Token Ring. The
  57. activity transferred its technology into the Darpa work via
  58. collaborative efforts with IPTO and MIT.

  62. CFG is a key player in the Program Design Methodology area. Held
  63. many other positions at Xerox Data Systems, RAND Corporation, and
  64. Bell Telephone Laboratories where he was a co-author of the SNOBOL
  65. programming language.
